Chief Leece told the committee the department will not send personnel inside the DMI or county-owned derelict buildings because of safety concerns. "We will not be sending any of my personnel or anybody that comes on scene in those buildings," he said, adding that the department will stage at the YMCA and protect surrounding exposures from outside the structure.
Leece noted the practice is documented in a letter the department sent about six or seven years ago and suggested reissuing it to new owners or leadership if turnover has occurred. Committee members agreed staff could prepare a reminder or updated letter and include that action in upcoming administrative reports.
