Committee weighs legal options as DMI property accrues nearly $10,000 in ordinance charges
Summary
A committee member reported Port Edwards has issued almost $10,000 in ordinance citations to DMI; the village may need outside counsel to serve an out-of-state owner, and members asked staff to obtain legal cost estimates before the full board decides next steps.

Amanda, a committee member, told the Port Edwards Public Works/Local Planning committee that village officers have issued ordinance citations to DMI and that outstanding charges are "almost just under $10,000." She said Village Legal advised that pursuing further action likely would require hiring outside counsel because DMI is out of state and the village may need to serve corporate defendants and pursue collections beyond routine citations.
Amanda said she would ask legal to provide cost estimates and options for the full village board to consider — whether to pursue cleanup, monetary recovery, or property reclamation. Committee members noted a complicating factor: one building on the site is owned by Wood County and another by DMI, so any enforcement or recovery effort will need to address multiple owners. Members agreed to bring the options and estimated legal costs to the board for a decision.
