District staff reported high chronic absenteeism across grade levels during the May 12 Dayton School District No. 8 board meeting.
Nicole Long and Jeff Taylor said the district's chronic absenteeism rates are 24% at the grade school, 35% at the junior high and 41% at the high school, yielding a district-wide rate of 33%. They said the district plans to develop consistent, cohesive systems to replace individual, ad hoc decisions and to use calibration and communication to improve attendance and behavior.
The presenters framed attendance as a statewide issue and identified consistency, clarity and proactive approaches as central strategies. Board members praised the behavior and attendance work and encouraged continued focus as the district faces budget pressures.
