Durham Council weighs modest July 4 midday celebration for 60th anniversary

City Administrator Jordan Parente presented preliminary plans to hold a midday July 4 celebration at Durham Park to mark the city’s 60th anniversary, with the proposed timeframe of 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. and modest refreshments such as ice cream or shaved ice. Parente said the city already placed a notice in the spring newsletter because the summer newsletter would likely be too late for advance notice.
Councilors discussed purpose and scale. Mayor Joshua Drake supported a casual format similar to the city’s 50th anniversary; Councilor Gary Paul suggested lawn games and Councilor David Streicher suggested small commemorative items bearing the Durham name or logo. Parente warned that serving full meals (hamburgers, hot dogs) would increase cost and logistical complexity, and Council President Leslie Gifford urged keeping costs low given broader budget pressures, including upcoming police contract negotiations.
Councilor Sean Lee suggested using the celebration as a community engagement opportunity by inviting partner agencies such as police, fire, Clean Water Services and Metro to participate. Parente noted limited staff capacity and suggested volunteer support or Planning Commission participation; council generally agreed staff should continue developing options and present cost and concept information during the budget process on April 28.
