District staff report improved attendance but await state benchmark data

"Our numbers show improvement," said S1 (Staff member), noting the district’s internal tracking currently averages about 94 percent attendance while the state reports approximately 92 percent.
Board members and staff distinguished short-term absences (medical appointments, sports, rodeos) from chronic absenteeism, which carries different consequences. S4 (Staff member) explained many absences were falling below former long-duration thresholds and that the district is seeing fewer students who never show up: "They're down to like 8 and 16 [hours]," S4 said, describing reduced make-up-hour burdens. The group agreed the district will compare its internal reports with the forthcoming state data in a few months before finalizing goals tied to attendance.
The presenters also noted enforcement actions taken by the county for chronic cases and said the district has relatively few students who qualify as chronically absent. The board asked staff to continue tracking and to present reconciled numbers at the next board meeting so goal language can reflect both local patterns and the state metric.
