Superintendent warns Title I funding could drop sharply; district may shift positions

Superintendent (speaker 2) told the board the district has been notified that its Title I federal funding could decrease substantially based on recent census data about residents. "We only get about $56,000 right now as it is from Title I funds," the superintendent said, adding that the census-based measure of family poverty within district boundaries has dropped and that the district expects a sizable reduction next year.
School leaders said they will likely need to reassign or absorb some Title I–funded staff costs into the general fund if federal support is reduced. "We probably're gonna be at least 50% less," the superintendent said when describing preliminary estimates shared with the board. Business manager (speaker 3) noted that some Title I-supported duties currently fund part of a staff position and would need cover from the general fund if the federal allocation declines.
Board members asked for clarification on timing and amounts. The superintendent said federal allocations are not yet finalized and the district will report concrete figures when the Department of Education issues final notices. Meanwhile, district leaders said they plan to shift budgets where possible and highlight Title I changes in upcoming budget meetings.
