Students recognized for athletics, service and biliteracy at board meeting
Summary
The Oct. 16 meeting featured student reports from the three high schools and recognition of student achievements including athletic championships, community service (3,000+ hours at East), and more than 70 students earning the Global Seal of Biliteracy.
Student representatives from High School East, North and South presented school highlights at the Oct. 16 board meeting, and the board awarded honors to several students.
High School East representative Ryan McComb highlighted a kindness campaign (respect theme), more than 3,000 combined community service hours over the summer, athletic wins, and homecoming events. High School North representative Gabriela Kostova reported championship wins for cross country and other athletic honors and noted that Tony Funk from North was named a Commended Student in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. High School South representative Sofia Sitta celebrated football and marching band victories and named seniors of the month.
The board also presented a Global Seal of Biliteracy recognition; Anne Gurel said over 70 district students have earned the Global Seal, which is offered in more than 100 languages and complements the New Jersey State Seal of Biliteracy. Presenters and board members congratulated students and staff for volunteer work and extracurricular achievements.
