Board advances first reading to let students opt out of locker rooms, loosen uniform rules

At its Oct. 16 meeting the board's policy committee presented a first reading of revisions to Policy 2422, the district's comprehensive physical education policy.
Policy committee chair Ashley (identified as the policy committee chair during the meeting) said the changes respond to feedback from students and families and include: (1) a statement that attire must be "safe and suitable" for physical activity; (2) an option for students who feel uncomfortable to forego locker-room use; (3) continued supervision in locker rooms and during transitions; (4) emphasis on grading participation rather than preparation; and (5) removal of a requirement for a specific white T-shirt uniform. "Students dressed appropriately for physical education can choose not to use the locker room if they don't feel comfortable doing so," Ashley said during the presentation.
Board members thanked staff and cited Mr. Kidney's input about locker-room supervision and blind spots where bullying can occur. The revision was put up for a first reading; the board noted it was being advanced rapidly in response to family concerns and that further committee and staff input informed the language.
