Board questions steep out-of-district special-education tuition costs

Finance and school staff explained that "drawdown" means the district encumbers an estimated amount and pays over time through multiple payments. Staff estimated about 130 students were placed out of district and said aggregate outlays for those placements could reach "about 8 to 10 million" in the examples discussed. "Not a lot of room to trim," the questioning board member said, underscoring that special-education placements drive high costs.
Administrators offered to provide a school-level breakdown of out-of-district placements and promised to follow up with the exact student counts. The Chair said staff would supply the requested figures to the board after the meeting.
