Board adds language to district goals to 'preserve our community schools'

The Toms River Regional School District’s curriculum committee reviewed revised district goals and an updated professional development plan that board members helped shape.
An administrator told the committee that feedback from board members led to changes in the student-achievement and culture-and-climate goals, including a new sentence in the budget goal stating the district’s actions will be taken “with the intention of preserving our community schools.” The administrator said the professional development plan’s right-column notes include the board’s suggestions on limiting overreliance on digital assessments while retaining a mix of digital and manual formative and summative assessments.
Board members also asked for clearer family-communication measures; the revised community goal includes a sentence to “expand website communication to provide additional avenues to spread awareness of school happenings to the school community.” The administrator said the updated goals and the professional development plan will be placed on the full board agenda for final approval at next week’s meeting.
The committee discussion emphasized that the district will continue using varied assessment strategies and will report progress on the number and quality of opportunities to enhance relationships across schools.
