A board member asked on July 23 whether community groups and outside coaches using school facilities are required to run background checks on adults who participate in events with students. District staff replied that contractual service providers who interact directly with students are required to undergo criminal-record and sex-offender-registry checks; community groups that simply rent facilities generally are not.
Staff recommended that if a community event involves school students and the district is endorsing or partnering with the outside group, adults should complete the district volunteer/background-check process. Staff also offered to meet with the superintendent and program staff to clarify procedures for the planned basketball partnership.
