County votes to oppose Virginia American Water rate increase and directs staff to take action

Prince George County supervisors voted to approve a resolution Dec. 16 directing county staff to oppose Virginia American Water's recent rate filing with the State Corporation Commission and to pursue representation of the county in the matter.
County engineer Mr. Holcomb briefed the board that Virginia American Water filed a multi-hundred-page application proposing roughly $21 million in additional revenue; staff estimates some customers could see about a 27% increase and noted interim rates could take effect May 1 while the case proceeds. "The majority, from what I can tell, that might impact the residents, it's about a 27% increase," Mr. Holcomb said.
Mr. Holcomb outlined options including joining other localities to pool resources and hire legal counsel (county share estimates were described as possibly around $7,500) or directing staff alone to present evidence and arguments to the SCC. After discussion, the board voted to approve the resolution opposing the increase and to have county staff pursue representation; the motion passed by roll call.
Chair and other supervisors said they preferred directing staff to act first, with the option of engaging legal counsel or forming a coalition with neighboring localities if needed. Staff will identify interested localities and determine next steps for review and potential participation before the commission.
