Small fire in district softball shed prompts quick response; initial equipment damage reported

Superintendent Pete reported that Benton City Fire, the Benton County Sheriff's Office and district staff responded to a small fire in the softball-shed near the track earlier that day. Staff said there were no significant injuries and that a custodian received medical evaluation; a number of items suffered smoke damage and a pitching machine took "the brunt of the flames," Pete said.
District maintenance recovered some equipment, including a four-wheeler, and staff will work with the district's insurer (ClearRisk) to inventory damage and process claims. Pete said a claims adjuster spoke with him within an hour and staff expect to know by the end of the week what repairs and replacement equipment will be needed and whether a contract will be required for smoke remediation.
Board members thanked first responders and commended students and coaches for their response. The superintendent said practice was able to continue the same evening with available equipment while damage assessments proceed.
The district will provide more detailed information after the insurance adjuster completes the inventory and the district finalizes its claim.
