Animal-shelter volunteers report high intake, seek TIF funds for new facility

Sharon Worney, speaking for the county animal shelter, told the Gibson County Board of Commissioners the shelter was handling a heavy intake and strong community support: "we have about 38 dogs and approximately 36 cats," she said, and noted 16 dogs are sponsored and dozens of animals are in foster care.
Worney described operational strains including three recent bite-response calls the shelter is coordinating with the health department on, and persistent phone and internet problems at the current shelter that have complicated public contact. She also listed several upcoming adoption events and thanked local businesses and volunteers for donations and foster assistance.
Volunteers asked commissioners for permission to approach the county's expired TIF district for up to $100,000 to purchase shelving, carts, hoses and other interior items needed to operate the new shelter. Commissioners authorized the group to pursue the request after county staff reported that interest on district accounts totals more than $200,000, while noting the final decision rests with the TIF board.
The board also approved appointing volunteers Carrie Tishner and Sarah Stewart as interim, unpaid shelter directors until a permanent hire is made. The motion to appoint the interim directors passed unanimously.
