Board Chair Dr. Williams announced at the July 21 meeting that he is resigning his positions as chairman and as a member of the Roanoke Rapids Graded School District board of trustees, effective at adjournment. "I tender my resignation as both chairman of the RRGSD board of trustees and a member of the board of trustees," he said, describing a decades-long relationship with the district and saying the timing would "maximize the district's future growth."
Trustees followed the district policy for electing a new chair. Ed Liverman was nominated and elected chair by voice vote; trustees also opened nominations for vice chair and selected Jeff Klaus in a recorded vote of 6–2. The board set Aug. 14 at 5:00 p.m. as the deadline for written applications to fill the vacancy left by the resignation. The board agreed to use the existing application form and may schedule interviews at the August meeting.
The board thanked the outgoing chair for long service; new chair Liverman thanked his colleagues and pledged to work with the superintendent and the board. The vote for vice chair was recorded as 6 in favor, 2 opposed; trustees who were recorded as voting against the tuition motion later in the meeting included Klaus, Dean and Hawkes, reflecting some of the divisions that emerged in other agenda items.
