Planning commission denies variance for proposed BP sign on Lumpkin Campground Road

The Dawson County Planning Commission on March 17 denied a variance request that would have allowed a BP gas-station monument sign with an 80-square-foot face and a maximum height of 15 feet, exceeding the county code limit of 48 square feet and 10 feet.
Caleb Licciardi, speaking for the applicant, said the larger sign was sought so the business could "compete competitively with the Circle K located down the road" and noted the sign would sit about 30 feet from the road and would still be smaller than some other local stations. Neighbor Jane Graves opposed the request, saying "it would be unsafe to permit a sign that large" given traffic in the area and arguing that the variance represented a "self-imposed hardship" because the owner chose a sign larger than the code allows. After closing the public hearing the commission voted to deny the request by a 3-0 vote (Maloney/Sanvi).
