Public asks whether growth projections account for private-school and voucher transfers

During the public comment portion, Mr. Jenkins asked whether the district’s growth figures represented program growth or actual student growth and raised concerns about students leaving for private schools. He said private-school enrollment and incentives could reduce district enrollment and asked how staff account for that in projections.
Doctor Quinn and Ken Love answered that some of the uptick is student growth tied to new housing developments (citing Westport, Lakeside Glen, Arbor Chase and Penley) and that a recently passed voucher bill contains interdistrict transfer requirements that will require opening seats to transfers. "We’re gonna have to open our district up for seats available," Love said, describing how the new law may affect enrollment projections. The board took the comment under advisement and closed the public hearing.
