Board hears math-standards changes: new sequence, new course options and phased-out classes

Miss Reed presented changes to the state math standards and explained the impact for Clover School District: the state conducted a cyclical review of standards and adopted new standards in December 2023 that affect high-school sequencing and certain course offerings. "The 2025 standards allow continuation of algebra 1, algebra 2 and precalculus without trying to guess where to put geometry," Reed said when outlining the new sequence.
She said some previously approved innovative courses were paused this school year and that probability & statistics has been reformatted as "statistical modeling." Reed and board members discussed options for students who are college-bound versus career-bound; Reed emphasized that algebra II remains an available course and that the sequence is intended to preserve college pathways while increasing options for students entering the workforce or two-year programs.
Board members pressed staff to ensure sufficient options for students who struggle in math; staff replied that statistics content is being distributed into geometry and algebra II to keep important concepts available across pathways. Staff said the district has begun a soft roll of implementation this school year and will fully implement the new standards in the 2025 school year, while continuing to test under the prior standards through current state testing cycles.
