Garden City students 'far surpass' national NWEA norms, superintendent says

Derek Fisher, superintendent of Garden City Public Schools, told host Dan York that recent NWEA benchmark scores show the district is outperforming national norms in several grades and subjects. "Overall, we've done very well," Fisher said, citing Memorial and Douglas elementary results and strong math scores for 9th and 10th graders at the high school.
Fisher attributed gains to the district's MTSS (multi‑tiered system of supports) and to curriculum alignment across grade levels. He pointed to early‑grade reading instruction and reading coaches as drivers of improvements and said those investments are helping students move from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," a transition he flagged as pivotal for 3rd grade and beyond. The district plans to continue monitoring NWEA benchmarks three times per year (fall, winter, spring) to track progress.
