Council approves special exception for woodworking business at 151 Oak St

The Jenkinsburg City Council voted to recommend a special exception permitting a woodworking and cabinetry home occupation at 151 Oak St in the A-R zoning district. The motion was made by Council Member Gary Roberts, seconded by Gary Brown, and carried unanimously.
Council recorded the applicant’s request to operate in an existing approximately 4,000 square-foot accessory structure. The approval includes nine conditions: an annual business license; operating hours limited to 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; no more than two clients or customers on site at a time; woodworking and cabinet making permitted only during normal operating hours; deliveries restricted to normal hours; inventory must be stored indoors (no outside storage); no more than two employees on premises at a time; the owner must mitigate sound, vibrations, odors and particulates to avoid creating a nuisance; and the special exception authorizes only woodworking, cabinet making and associated activities.
The public hearing portion of the agenda included comments both supporting and opposing the request; the meeting minutes do not record the names of commenters. Council emphasized the conditions were intended to limit impacts on neighboring residential properties while allowing the property owner to run a small business at the site.
