County partners report progress on energy‑efficiency grants; local recipient thanks the program

Steve Meyer of Energy Demand Solutions updated the Commission on a Department of Energy‑backed community energy‑efficiency program run with Kit Carson and Taos County. Meyer said the project had cleared 107 homes as of the meeting and that the partners plan to serve a total of 950 income‑qualified homes under the grant. He described DOE‑certified energy audits, combustion‑safety testing, lighting and weather‑stripping work, and replacement of old refrigerators with Energy Star models.
"We just cleared a 100 homes that we've done, 107 as of yesterday," Meyer said, and described the program as delivering energy savings at a fraction of the cost of utility‑scale generation. He introduced a participant, Verlinda Ruggerio, who told commissioners she had been ill for years, needed a working refrigerator to store insulin, and called the program "fabulous" for helping elderly and disabled residents.
Commissioners thanked Meyer and staff; no formal action was required. Staff said the program is grant‑funded through the Energy Conservation and Management Division and partnerships with Kit Carson and local contractors.
