The Emergency Communications Center (ECC) director told the board the ECC currently staffs about 20 positions (director, two supervisors and 17 communications officers) and is operating below ideal shift minimums. The ECC reported a five‑year phone traffic trend increase and "we're right around 104,000 in 2025," reflecting rising workload for dispatch and records entry.
To improve reliability and proactive system management, ECC requested one Public Safety Technology Coordinator to provide 24/7 operational support for mission‑critical systems across police, fire/EMS and Fort Lee public‑safety platforms. The ECC proposed a Fort Lee cost‑sharing contribution of about $56,594 under the existing IGSA to reduce the county’s share. The director said the position would help reduce reactive vendor calls, consolidate responsibilities now scattered across police, ECC and IT, and improve resiliency for dispatch systems.
Board members asked about retention, training timelines and the candidate sourcing plan; ECC said training and recruitment remain challenges in the 9‑1‑1 industry and that the current employee eligible for retirement may require a posted recruitment if she retires.
