Board approves Grandview highly capable student plan required by state

Shante DeFalco (S8), the district's special programs director, presented the Grandview School District highly capable plan required by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. DeFalco said the district currently identifies 113 students as highly capable and uses a Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) screener for 2nd and 6th graders to find additional students; she noted three students are "twice-exceptional," qualifying as both highly capable and as students with disabilities.
Board members asked whether new or transfer students are tested outside the 2nd- and 6th-grade screeners; DeFalco said there is a referral process and that students already designated by other districts are accepted. Chair (S2) moved for approval and the board voted to approve the plan.
The approval places the district in compliance with the state requirement to maintain and present a highly capable plan; board direction included no substantive edits at the meeting.
