Board member (speaker 11) asked the district to ensure the revised policy aligns with the district’s strategic plan and graduation pathways and to consider special-education needs. “Is it equitable?… Is it meaningful?… Or is it another checkbox?” she asked, urging the district to avoid a requirement that becomes merely transactional.
Board discussion also covered flexibility for staff participation in board meetings (allowing a designated representative if a staff member is unavailable) and whether community-service options such as Silverwood trips or city-sponsored service should count. The Director noted the district will compile a list of community partners and opportunities (for example, the Rotary Community Day of Service on April 25) to help students find eligible placements.
A motion to approve the GHS community-service-hour revision was made by speaker 6, seconded by speaker 7, and carried by voice vote. The board asked staff to review meaningfulness, equity, and alignment with graduation requirements during the next policy review steps.
