Grandview director says district completed full active-shooter-to-reunification drill

The Grandview School District’s director of safety told the board the district has “successfully completed shoot to reunification, for an emergency situation for the school district,” describing a multi-stage exercise that began with lockdown and evacuation training and concluded April 11 with a full reunification test.

The director said roughly 29–30 students participated in the reunification portion and that the district and partners revised procedures after a roundtable and time-analysis showed older methods could have required “up to 12 hours” to complete reunification. He said the district moved away from a computer-first process to a paper-based system during the test to eliminate delays and accelerate family reunions. “We were able to test the time analysis piece on how long it would take,” he said.

Speakers at the meeting credited law enforcement and fire departments across the valley for participating, and described a regional turnout that included Union Gap and West Richland agencies and three hospitals. One board exchange noted a quick operational result during the exercise: after being given roughly two hours to eliminate threats and evacuate, responders completed the exercise’s medical and extraction tasks in about 38 minutes, a point the director highlighted as evidence the revised approach reduced key timelines.

Board members asked for a formal debrief and evaluator report once compiled. The director said evaluators’ findings from county emergency services will be included in a holistic evaluation and that the district will continue refining procedures based on that feedback.
