Commissioners approve $6,000 for county IT failover circuit

The Scott County commissioners on July 14 approved ordinance 2026-76, allocating $6,000 from the general fund to the county IT department for a failover Internet and phone circuit. The full circuit costs $12,000 a year; the approved amount represents a half-year appropriation the county intends to absorb within this fiscal year.
Andrew Campbell of the county IT department described the service and its operational benefits, saying, “The failover circuit will provide Internet and phone capability if we lose our primary connection,” and that the vendor can also perform load balancing to increase county bandwidth. The chair moved the ordinance, the motion was seconded, and the commissioners recorded the vote as 6-0 in favor.
Commissioners noted the change in phone carrier and that without a failover the county’s phones could go down when Internet service is interrupted. Chair thanked the IT staff for handling the service change and the downtime that preceded the request. With the appropriation approved the county will bring the new circuit online and place the recurring cost in upcoming budget planning.
The ordinance was read on the record as 2026-76 and accepted in a unanimous vote. The commission did not set an effective sunset date; staff indicated the line will be folded into next year’s budget discussions.
