Committee authorizes superintendent to negotiate acquisition of Townsend fitness equipment as a gift
Summary
The committee authorized Superintendent Morgan to negotiate terms with the town of Townsend to acquire fitness-court equipment as a gift; preliminary project cost estimates totaled about $138,000 and two earmarks (approx. $30,000 and $150,000) would make the project zero-cost to the district if secured.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Reese described recent discussions with Townsend officials about placing fitness-court equipment the town purchased onto district grounds. Dr. Reese summarized cost components: about $48,000 for new adhesive/shipping for previously purchased equipment, roughly $45,000–$50,000 for a concrete slab, and approximately $40,000 for assembly and installation — a subtotal Dr. Reese presented at about $138,000.
Dr. Reese said Townsend has an earmark of approximately $30,000 from Senator Scarsdale for slab work and a proposed $150,000 earmark from Senator Cronin. "Between the two earmarks, this would be a 0 cost to the district," he said. Legal counsel recommended drafting simple language so the town could gift the equipment and the district could set terms for public use outside the school day.
Kim Craven moved and the committee voted to authorize the superintendent to continue negotiations and to have legal draft an agreement for the potential gift, with the understanding the agreement would return to both the district and the Townsend select board for formal approval. Dr. Reese said staff will seek quotes, work on the concrete schedule to allow summer work (installation ideally before late September), and consider timing constraints if federal earmarks arrive later in the fall.
