KCK Public Schools announces Aug. 1 back-to-school fair and new phone rules for students

Marco Johnson of Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools told the meeting the district's annual back-to-school fair will be Aug. 1 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Homefield KC (9250 State Ave.) with roughly 60 social-service vendors, free backpacks, school supplies, vision and dental screenings, sports physicals and immunizations. He said the event is open to Wyandotte County residents.
"We encourage everyone to come out and take part of this," Marco said, noting partners such as the public library and local health services will provide services. Edwin (speaker 14) followed with calendar details: the first day of school is Aug. 12 for K–5, 6th grade and 9th grade, and the remainder of grades return Aug. 13.
Edwin summarized a new Kansas law that took effect July 1 prohibiting students from having or using personal communication devices during the school day, and he said the district has an FAQ page online about the policy. School officials asked families to review the district's guidance and the district's resources for questions about the new rules.
