DA's office says expungement fair helped 143 people start record-clearing process

"In the two days, 143 people came out and start the process to get their records cleared," Damien said, adding that over the roughly eight years the program has served about 1,170 people who have begun or completed the expungement process. He explained the fair is an outreach event that helps people complete filing paperwork and that Unite KC and Kansas Legal Services provided funds to cover filing fees for attendees.
Damien described eligibility norms: expungement timelines vary by charge — generally five years but sometimes as short as three for eligible offenses — and that certain crimes (homicide, sex offenses against children, and similar severe crimes) are not eligible for expungement. He encouraged residents who need help to go to the DA's office to begin the process even outside the fair.
