Westfield approves contract with Big Impact to develop AI governance and city use cases

The Westfield Board of Public Works and Safety approved a contract with consulting firm Big Impact to create updated governance policies and implement AI use cases across city departments. Danielle Carey Tolan, executive chief of staff, told the board the contractor will "help leading" a task group to ensure governance is applied citywide and will work on implementing "high value use cases" and training for staff.
Carey Tolan said the city already has an AI policy but wants to make it more robust as use expands: "we already have an AI policy, but that we need to make it a little bit more robust like any other community, and we're just kinda getting ahead of it now." The board approved the statement of work by voice vote with no recorded dissent, and staff said they would return with final contract documents and governance materials.
