Substitute teachers, residents urge board to reject 20% pay cut

During the agenda‑item public comment period, substitute employee Adriana Ganassi described discovering a 20% pay reduction at the end of May and said the change will reduce her summer earnings and hinder plans such as buying a house. Ganassi said substitutes lack union representation and appealed directly to the board for support.
"We found out about our pay cut at the end of May. That gave us 3 paychecks to get our ducks in a row before the board even knew," Ganassi said. She said the reduction of roughly 20% is significant and that substitutes often rely on summer earnings.
Jim Nash, a longtime resident and Gloucester Township councilman, spoke next and urged board members to stand with residents and substitutes, saying about 70 employees would be affected and that many are township residents. "Seventy employees that you're asking to take a 20% reduction in times that we shouldn't be doing it," Nash told the board.
Board members listened but did not announce a reversal of the proposed changes during public comment; the matter was discussed later as part of the consent and personnel items and will be subject to further board consideration.
