Board unanimously adds brief discussion of proposed data-center moratorium to evening agenda

County staff asked the Board to add two items for their evening agenda: adoption of a 30-day moratorium on acceptance of new data-center permit or zoning applications, and a call for a public hearing to consider extending that moratorium up to 180 days on August 18. Commissioner Ragsdale moved to add the discussion; Commissioner Cagle seconded and the motion passed unanimously. Brantley Day told the Board the 30-day pause would give staff time to develop standards and requirements and, if needed, to return to the Board with a recommendation for a longer moratorium.
Chair said he did not believe a moratorium would do harm and that staff could likely handle any application, but several members said a pause to draft standards was wise. Staff confirmed there were no active data-center applications at the time of the meeting. The Board will consider adoption of the short moratorium and the public-hearing schedule at the evening session.
