Senators press HUD nominee on Fair Housing Initiative funds and housing trust fund allocations

Lawmakers asked HUD CFO nominee Dennis whether recent Fair Housing Initiative funding would reach experienced nonprofit enforcement groups and urged quick allocation of a $238 million housing trust fund balance to produce housing units.
Senator Warnick raised concerns about the Fair Housing Initiatives program and said HUD announced $83,000,000 under the program; Dennis said he was not exactly sure how those dollars will flow and that distribution is a program decision. "Within the office of the chief financial officer, we're responsible for making sure those funds are available, and then they're properly accounted for once they leave out and reported," Dennis said.
Senator Reid noted that $238,000,000 is currently in the housing trust fund waiting to be allocated and urged Dennis to do everything possible to get the funding out the door to build or rehab almost 2,000 housing units; Dennis reiterated that allocation is a program decision but said he would work with program officials and share the senator's concerns.
