Board hears trade-offs in proposed Churchill–Hoover elementary consolidation

Board members raised questions about the plan to consolidate Churchill and Hoover grade spans and to shift some early-learning programs to Gage. Several directors acknowledged strong local attachment to the existing split configuration and asked how the district would reassure families that K–5 configurations are safe and developmentally appropriate.
Administration responded with brief data analysis comparing incident reports across elementary schools, saying there were only one or two incidents in prior years that involved students a grade apart and concluding that disciplinary issues in district elementary schools are overwhelmingly same-grade occurrences. Jackie Peterson, the district’s chief operating officer, and other administrators also described educational benefits from unified K–5 buildings such as vertical planning and stronger continuity. The board discussed how the physical footprint, green space and parking considerations factor into which building is best suited for particular programs and asked staff to provide more outreach notes to Churchill families before the Aug. 4 vote.
