The commission adopted Ordinance 8a on second and final reading to regulate electric bicycles within the city, updating definitions, enforcement and penalties.
A resident, David Virgil, spoke in favor: "By banning electric bikes from the sidewalks, it will help prevent serious accidents from occurring, and that will improve the quality of life of everyone here in the city," he said. Staff said the ordinance includes a 30-day education period beginning from the announced date; citations would start after that period with a $250 fine for a first violation and $500 for a second.
Commissioners had no additional questions during the public hearing and voted to adopt the ordinance on final reading. Staff said the education and enforcement timetable begins immediately, with citations slated roughly 30 days after adoption.
