Battalion Chief and Fire Marshal Ozzie Jarman presented the Lufkin Fire Department’s Fire Service Lifesaving Awards at the city council meeting, recognizing eight personnel whose actions in two separate emergency incidents directly contributed to patients surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests. “The Fire Service Life Saving Award is presented to a firefighter who is directly responsible for saving a human life,” Jarman said, noting that nationwide only about 10% of patients who suffer an EMS-treated, non‑traumatic, out‑of‑hospital cardiac arrest survive to be discharged.
Jarman described the first response by the crew of Med 2 and Engine 2 — led by paramedic James Jefferson with Blaine Byram, Caleb Bumstead and Toby Smith — who arrived to find a patient pulseless and not breathing and provided advanced life support that left the patient awake and talking before leaving the emergency room. The second response involved Med 4 and Engine 4, led by paramedic Matthew Moody with Jonathan Hammond, Corey Ballard and Jack Bowers; that crew restored a pulse at the scene. The council joined in congratulating the recipients and acknowledged Chief Moody and staff for the presentation.
