Community split on proposal to add a student representative to the board

Other members of the public disagreed. One resident asked what the original absentee policy had been and expressed skepticism about the need for a student representative at the board level; Jen Tompkins said she was not convinced one student could adequately represent the diversity of students and thought existing channels (principals, counselors, club leaders) were sufficient.
Board members clarified the proposal remains in discussion and has not been approved. The public comment period included related remarks about a voucher lawsuit and whether the district should join; Singer urged participation in the legal challenge and said oversight metrics for voucher programs should match district standards.
The board acknowledged the comments and said it will continue discussion of the student-representative proposal in future meetings.
