Commission reviews Santa Fe Depot rehabilitation concepts, staff cites $850,000 grant

City staff and Arcaterra Design Group presented conceptual designs for the Santa Fe Depot rehabilitation and solicited commissioner input on styles, materials and budget trade-offs. Service Director Mr. Dahlquist said the city was awarded a community-project funding grant from Congressmember Norma Torres for "$850,000" to help fund the rehabilitation. ArcaterraD7s Greg Denson introduced the concept package and noted the design seeks to improve ADA slopes, add raised planters, repaint and re-plaster the depot and platform canopies, install a new pedestal sign and upgrade lighting and bike storage. Denson said the team will refine designs after the commission workshop.
Commissioners favored a simpler, durable finish for existing shelters (to reduce visible dirt), debated sign placement and materials (powder-coated steel vs. Corten-style finishes) and urged staff to consider maintainability and value-engineering options to fit the grant. One commissioner suggested sponsorships or donor recognition as a possible funding supplement; staff said they would raise the idea with council. Dahlquist said Arcaterra will use commission feedback to finalize the conceptual design for a subsequent council workshop and then prepare construction documents to bid the work.
