Committee agrees to create standalone capital project for Johnson’s Local Park

Council and Parks staff agreed on March 9 to establish a standalone capital project (PDF) for Johnson’s Local Park so the project can expand beyond a routine park refresher. Director Mittie Figueredo said community interest has expanded the project scope and that a standalone PDF would support a facility plan (~30% design) needed to determine full costs.
"...because the project is now of such a scope and potential cost, we do believe...we would need to do this as a standalone project," Figueredo told the committee, explaining the $2,500,000 figure would cover early planning work and allow Parks to produce more detailed cost estimates. Committee members asked whether partial funding would be useful; Figueredo replied a standalone PDF is worthwhile even if only partly funded and Parks will pursue supplementary state and other sources.
The committee directed staff to create the standalone PDF and to investigate appropriate funding sources—GO/geo bonds, current revenue, state aid, or M‑NCPPC bonds—while Parks pursues a facility plan and refined scope. A final funding decision was deferred pending the department’s facility plan, additional funding options, and the council’s broader budget decisions.
