Roxanne Hicks, representing Edgewater Animal Shelter, told the New Smyrna Beach Animal Control Board that during 2025 the shelter took in 138 animals from the city. She reported 29 animals were returned to their owners and 71 were adopted. Hicks said Edgewater recorded an "81% live release rate for the city of New Smyrna Beach," and that transfers to partners such as Sophie Circle Rescue and Brevard County SPCA are used for animals that are difficult to place.
Hicks explained four unassisted deaths in custody were neonatal kittens that were too young to survive without mothering and that the shelter accepts surrenders and strays from multiple jurisdictions across Volusia County under contractual agreements. She invited board members to ask questions and provided the shelter's contact number for nonemergency dispatch.
