Upper Macungie runs 13-candidate interview marathon to fill vacant supervisor seat

The Upper Macungie Township Board of Supervisors spent the evening interviewing 13 applicants to replace Supervisor Julian Godbars, who resigned on June 10. Attorney Andrew Schantz opened the candidate portion by explaining eligibility criteria, deadlines and the length of the appointment the board may make. "We expect everyone to allow the other candidates appropriate time ... and not interrupt their answers," the Chair said as the board described a timed, 20-minute interview procedure.
Candidates ranged from longtime volunteers and HOA leaders to technology and nonprofit professionals. Several candidates emphasized concerns about traffic and sidewalks, emergency-service planning and the impact of industrial development. David Costa urged more sidewalks and traffic-calming near Lone Lane; a candidate with fire-service leadership experience urged an "analysis of our emergency services" to keep pace with rapid growth.
The evening was designed to be public and orderly: the board said deliberations on a final appointment would occur in public, and counsel reminded applicants that any appointed supervisor must file a statement of financial interest by May 1, 2027. The township extended the deadline for submitting supporting eligibility documents to the township offices by 4:00 p.m. Thursday.
