Verona proposes tighter attendance rules: parent notes alone won’t excuse repeated absences

The Verona Board of Education considered a first reading of proposed changes to the student attendance regulation that would limit parent‑notified illness excusals to four absences per school year. "Illness absences in excess of 4 per school year and any illness absence of 3 or more consecutive school days shall be excused only upon written certification from a physician or other licensed health care provider," Superintendent Diane DiGiosepi said.
Board members asked how the district will communicate the change to families and how school‑sponsored activities are handled. DiGiosepi said the district will use its communication app and principals will remind families at back‑to‑school nights; automatic attendance letters are sent via the Genesis parent portal and parents who do not use the portal may not receive the notices unless they enroll in notifications. The superintendent also said the policy includes a limit on school‑sponsored absences (no more than five sessions of any single class per year) and that principal approval is required for additional absences tied to planned school activities.
