District reports rise in out‑of‑state commercial FOIA requests
Summary
District officials told the board they have seen an increase in out‑of‑state, commercial Freedom of Information Act requests—rising from 40 requests (25% commercial) three years ago to 70 requests (50% commercial) last year—and that seven requests since July 1 came from the same out‑of‑state commercial requester.

During the director’s report, the district reported a notable increase in Freedom of Information Act requests coming from out‑of‑state commercial requesters. “Three years ago, the district received a total of 40 FOIA’s and 25% of those were commercial,” the director said, adding that “this last year, we received a total of 70 FOIA’s and 50% of those were commercial.”
The director said that since July 1 the district had received seven FOIA requests from the same out‑of‑state commercial requester and that staff are verifying origins and coordinating with the district’s legal firm before responding. The director noted that five FOIA requests were received since the last board meeting and responsive documents are listed in the public board packet.
