Library director warns of possible $1M state cut, urges competitive wages

Library Director Tara Engel reported to the council that the state budget process could include a roughly $1 million cut to State Library funding, which she said would jeopardize access to databases, audiobooks and other services the Gregory Library receives through the State Library. "The State Library has sent out postcards that citizens and patrons can fill out and mail to the state legislature and governor to try to lessen or halt the cuts," Engel told the council and asked for the council's support.
Cara Hull, a library board member, described the library staff as "a great team that does an awesome job" and urged the council to keep wages competitive so the city does not lose year-round employees. Engel also noted recent donations (eleven boxes of large-print books) and receipt of 102 books through the Pilcro grant and described ongoing programs such as a STEM club and the Books for Christmas tree program.
