Resident gives city Jan. 10 deadline over $112,270 sewer-backup claim

Alice Slade of 511 E. 12th St. told the Gregory City Council on Dec. 17 that a sewer backup on Sept. 29 caused damage she believes is the city's responsibility and that she has "given the city until January 10th to decide a course of action." Slade told the council her homeowner's insurance will not cover more than $10,000 for a sewer backup and presented repair estimates totaling $112,270.00.
Mayor Al Cerny said the City of Gregory's insurance thus far has not found the city negligent and that the matter remains under investigation; he also raised the option of installing a back-check valve at the property to reduce future risk while noting the expectation that the homeowner maintain such a valve. The council took no formal action on the claim at the meeting.
