Supported-employment pilot: Matthew’s recycling role shows training and workplace supports

Amy McCann described an on-site recycling pilot that trains program participants to reduce recycling contamination at Common Space and to provide a pathway to paid work. "Ideally, we'd love to see once Matthew gets this up and running... other organizations might be interested in saying, hey. Can we help to engage with you and your recycling program?" McCann said the project uses visual supports and role coaching.
Matthew, who uses a talker for communication, demonstrated aspects of his work during the presentation. When asked how he feels after completing a task, Matthew responded (via his communication device), "Happy." Staff emphasized that the pilot began about six weeks earlier, that volunteers and mentors help participants, and that the initiative seeks local organizational partners to host or scale the recycling effort.
