Board approves Shipley Avenue transportation facility schematic design

The superintendent recommended and the board approved schematic design for a new transportation facility at Shipley Avenue intended to consolidate parts of the district's transportation operations.
Board members described the project as the culmination of a 2019-20 facilities audit and said it would provide needed real estate for bus parking, create better working conditions for staff and provide a path toward more in-house fleet capacity. Acting COO Jeff Hagan told the board the district does not intend to displace local contractors and will keep the South River site for South County operations while consolidating other lots; Superintendent Bedell said the district currently uses about 16 different contractors and the new facility could allow greater in-house capacity.
The motion to approve the Shipley Avenue schematic passed on a unanimous vote (8-0).
