Sheriff: 3,886 calls for service in first half of 2026; one firearm arrest at festival

Sheriff Matt King delivered the St. Clair County sheriff’s semiannual activity report to the Algonac City Council, saying, “So far in the 1st 0.5 of this year, being January 1 to the end of July or June, we have, responded to 3,886 calls for service.” He gave a breakdown of noncriminal calls, medical calls and various complaint categories and said the department’s year-to-date numbers are on track with last year’s totals.

King described staffing and public-safety work at recent city events. Reviewing the weekend coverage for the city’s summer festivities, he said deputies staffed the parade, a beer tent and fireworks; there was one arrest after officers found a subject “in possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated.” King said most nights were otherwise “pretty uneventful” and highlighted deputies’ use of property checks to prevent crime.

Council members asked King about deputy work hours and whether more routine patrols could address safety concerns with golf carts and electric bikes during events. King said he would provide documented hours to the council and encouraged residents and council members to report concerns early so deputies can respond proactively. He also noted the sheriff contract is up next year and said he and his command staff would be willing to meet with the city about timing and potential contract extensions.

Next steps: King said he would email the council a breakdown of deputy work hours on request and that the department will continue coordinating event security with city staff.
