Auditors flag repeat finding: food service fund holds excess cash

Auditors said the district's food service enterprise fund currently holds excess cash resources that exceed Department of Agriculture guidelines, a repeat finding the auditors have raised in prior years. "The food service fund has excess cash resources, higher than what the Department of Agriculture looks for," auditor Jerry Convey said.
Convey said the enterprise fund operated at a deficit this year because the district is starting to spend down those excess cash resources. He added the district took steps to reduce meal prices "despite costs going up and salaries going up" to draw down the excess cash, and that auditors expect the finding to resolve either this year or the next.
Board members asked how long the corrective condition would persist; Convey replied the issue should disappear by FY25–26 or at latest the following year, depending on how quickly the district spends the reserve down.
The auditors— note is recorded as a management report finding rather than a single‑audit compliance failure; staff described it as an unusual problem of "too much money" in the enterprise fund that may require continued operational adjustments rather than immediate corrective accounting entries.
