Commissioners vote to seek sponsorship to change county salary classification

The board discussed a proposed reclassification of elected-official pay after staff presented updated Consumer Price Index (CPI) figures that set pay levels for the upcoming term. "The new CPI index came out in November... For commissioners, it is $67,360. For sheriff, $75,511. And for treasurer, assessor and clerk, it is $67,360; part-time coroner $15,225," Eric (speaker 2) told the board while explaining the statutory process for changing categories via a resolution and legislative sponsor.

Commissioners debated whether to submit a resolution this year or wait for a later cycle to avoid creating a larger pay gap between elected positions. One commissioner raised the idea of adopting an objective salary schedule similar to federal GS levels to reduce ad hoc adjustments. Concerns were also raised about budget impacts and potential cuts or service reductions if salary savings are redeployed: one commissioner noted contracting some services to neighboring counties would not necessarily reduce payroll costs. After discussion, Eric moved to seek legislative sponsorship to change the county’s classification from 5C to 5B; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote. The board asked staff to prepare a draft resolution and supporting materials for submission in January.
